What do you see…
on the horizon
Beyond the delicate lace of seaweed, the spindrift of waves, and the puddling hem of a setting sun as it enters the sea’s embrace, sits another story. A deeper story. It’s the story of us. We human beings who call this ocean planet home are key protagonists in the plot and pacing of this tale. Individual actions will have everything to do with how our collective story unfolds.
On the horizon. Look again. Your eyes light upon 16 acrylic resin cylinders filled with sea water. Each stands 6-feet high at the water’s edge. You walk among them, dance with them, marvel at the beauty of these suspended aqueous forms as they soften, refract and amplify everything that surrounds you. Mysterious and inspiring, they bring you to wonder at your own physicality, how you ebb and flow as an integral part of the web of life. And this is precisely the intrinsic role you are being invited to play.
Sea levels are expected to rise more than 6.6 feet due to a staggering increase in greenhouse emissions and global temperatures. Wittingly or unwittingly, this is due to us. Imagine all that you would lose if the things you love were buried under 6 feet of water. What and who would you dive down to rescue? Think about it. Now let’s dive in together to rescue and protect as much of this glorious life as we can. That is our intention in creating On the Horizon. Artist and Activist Ana Teresa Fernandez explains: The columns are a window into our future, into ourselves. They’re in conversation with the human brain and heart (both 73% water) and the lungs with which we breathe (83% water). Our bodies can feel what’s coming if we don’t respond. We need to move to contain all that is in peril. Standing still is not an option.
