Pillars of Strength : Spain

When I arrived to La Fragua Residency, I was informed that the art center’s adjacent building was not to be visited due to a crack in the roof. From the courtyard, one could see the roof beginning to slope down. The director told me this was an age old struggle finding funding to fix that part of the convent/art center. I decided to use the “pillars of strength” in our society, women, to try to hold up the building for  a while longer. I did a performance as I stood on a bucket and held every other pillar in high heels and wearing a black dress. I documented the performance then drew from the picture straight unto the wall. Contrary to the customary attire of the nuns, these contemporary women stand guard as caryatids holding the falling roof that in the pushing down to their pointy heels.
